About Us

The Aamchii Mumbai Smokefree Mumbai Campaign aims to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in Mumbai by ensuring the implementation of the national notification of the law for smoke-free public places. The key activities are political and community assessment, sensitization and awareness for the public, key stakeholders and policy makers, grassroots mobilization, media advocacy, encouraging the government to monitor implementation and act on reported violations of the law, research and evaluation. The “ACT-India”, “Tata Memorial Hospital”, “Healis Sekhsaria Foundation for Public Health”, the “Salaam Bombay Foundation”, V-Care and CPAA are partnering this intiative with the MCGM. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM)’s Department of Public Health, and the Health Department of the State of Maharashtra are both the major targets and also potential allies of the campaign for implementation and strengthening of smoke-free laws. Key stakeholders include restaurant owners, the public policy makers, and workers unions. Specific measurable objectives are as follows:


  • Assess and increase public awareness of the current national legislation and the city’s commitment to implementing it
  • Assess and increase public and political support for Smoke-Free Mumbai ordinance and a smoke-free workplace law, banning smoking in all public and work places
  • Build capacity of enforcers and other stakeholders for effective implementation of the national smoke-free act
  • Increase and build the capacity of civil society organizations in advocacy and monitoring of the smoke free policies
  • Raise public demand for smoke free places through key media messages which have demonstrated scientific effectiveness in Mumbai
  • Increase the number of smoke-free public places in Mumbai
